As a massage therapist for over 20 years I always love hearing the spa trends for the year. I am hopeful that more people will learn the health benefits of massage and not see it as a luxury item. All people from all walks of life benefit from massage.

Let’s explore some of the different spa trends for 2012:

1. Feet Focus – Reflexology – Foot Massage

On the rise are multi-treatments focused on the feet. Specific work on the foot due to high-heel pain.

Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas offers a Shanghai foot massage.

La Costa Spa now has a Reflexology Path at their Carlsbad Resort in San Diego.

2. Cold & Ice – Icy therapies & cold experiences are hot!

Great for inflammation and pain reduction.

QUA Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas now has an “Arctic Ice Room”

Sparkling Hill Resort & Wellness Center offers a Cold Sauna (Cryotherapy) Treatment in Vernon, BC Canada

You might start getting facials and noticing that there are more icy masks and cold applications being used.

Austrian spa designer Thermarium is expected to launch a “snow shower” this year. You will be able to choose between a light snow, medium snowfall and a blizzard.

3. Wellness & Beauty Coaching – Helping people make long-term life changes

You may find that some spas will now have more “fitness coaches” available to work with you on your fitness and health.

5. The Ultimate Connoisseur Experience -Pairing fine dining with spa experience. Healthy Hedonism.

Hospitals (e.g. UCLA Medical Center) are now offering Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Integrative Therapy.

Hospitals are starting to offer Eastern healing approaches which include massage, acupuncture, reiki, music and art therapies.

9. Spas are becoming a family affair – The Kinder-Spa Craze.

Probably the best way to decide which street vendors to approach for food are the ones with the long lines.

In San Francisco the Tamale Lady is known for coming into bars with her wonderful Tamale’s. I’ve had my fill of those amazing tamales. To top it off Virginia (Tamale Lady) is always a pleasure to visit with and she remembers people too. So if visiting San Francisco and at a bar don’t hesitate trying the Tamale Lady’s food. She’s an icon in the Bay area.
