ESCAPE THE SUMMER HEAT – KAYAK WITH ORCAS IN COOL BC CANADA

Come join us in cool British Columbia this July, August and early September on a guided sea kayak trip to view orcas and eagles!  Camp at our exclusive basecamp in and go to sleep to the sound of orca blows!
Why this trip:  It’s the only orca preserve in the world; the “Jane Goodall”of orcas (scientist Alexandra Morton) has studied these unique salmon-eating orcas for years; the single best time and place in the world to paddle with orca families; perfect for novices new to sea kayaking; we provide all gear and naturalist guides.

TELEGRAPH COVE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — Sea Kayak Adventures, Inc. invites outdoor-minded folks to join its three to six-day fully guided paddling trips through the wilds of British Columbia’s Johnstone Strait off northern Vancouver Island.  This narrow sheltered orca freeway is world renowned for its summer congregations of hundreds of “killer whales” following the salmon runs funneled from the sea into this specific area.  In fact, Canada is the first and only country in the world to establish and maintain an orca preserve there.  The Michael Biggs Robson Bight Orca Preserve is set aside specifically for these unique northern resident orcas, found nowhere else in the world.  Researchers flock here to study these orcas.

Participants will paddle two-person sea kayaks through the glacier-carved waterways between Vancouver Island and the rugged mountains of mainland British Columbia.  Along the way, they’ll get close to wild orcas, as the strait is a traditional gathering place for these whales. Guides scan the calm waters for spouts and point out whale behavior.  Bald eagles dot the towering trees along the shore, feasting as do the orcas on the prolific salmon runs here.

The group will also explore the area’s rainforest on foot, visit the ancient First Nations village of Memquimlis to view its totem poles and remains of a traditional longhouse, visit orca researchers and hopefully glimpse a black bear from their kayaks.  Each night, they’ll camp on secluded island beaches where they can also watch orcas from their tents.

Trips depart from Port McNeill on northern Vancouver Island, BC Canada – weekly July through early September 2012 (3 to 6 days paddling; $995-1395/person).  The price includes all camping and kayaking equipment, meals, kayaking instruction and guide services.  Youth get 10% off above prices.  Tax and airfare not included.

WHALES FROLICKING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL IS SOUL-REJUVENATING (Giveaway!)

BRITISH COLUMBIA  — For nearly 20 years, Sea Kayak Adventures, Inc. has pioneered wilderness whale watching and novice sea kayak trips in sheltered areas with the “biggest bang for your buck” close-up whale encounters. Since inception, the company has explored and obtained permits to operate in the best whale watching waters in the western hemisphere, including the orca waters of BC Canada’s Johnstone Strait by kayak, the gray whale calving lagoons of Baja by small skiff, humpback whales off Sitka Alaska by mothership, and the Southern Right whales of Argentine Patagonia. Check out the company’s YouTube channel for close encounters of the whale kind!

SKA co-founder Nancy Mertz remarks “each time we see whales frolicking up close and personal on our guided tours and see the faces of our guests light up with joy, we feel so lucky to be doing what we are. We all need this for our very souls.” She added, “since we’ve been in business since 1993, we have actually seen the numbers of whales increase in the areas we tour, which is thrilling. The local citizens have come to see whale watching and ecotourism as a very important source of revenue and pride in their communities. We also picked destinations that were relatively easy to get to by air, so that folks can spend their vacation whale watching”.

If you want to try kayak touring or whale watching, but have no desire to rough it or camp out, the company offers venues ranging from lodge-based trips, mothership trips (liveaboard a small 6-passenger ship), safari-style camping trips or even day tours from a hotel base. The company’s naturalist guides will inform and educate you about all things whale, while “wining and dining” you and providing all gear, transport and land costs needed to meet everyone’s needs.

From a sea kayak or small boat, you will have the opportunity to see whales, porpoises, sea lions and other marine mammals and sea birds frolicking in their natural habitat, attracted by the prolific and diverse sea life present in the world-class areas the company visits. All areas enjoy high levels of protection. Johnstone Strait off British Columbia’s northern Vancouver Island is home to the world’s only orca preserve – Robson Bight Ecological Preserve – a research focus for world-renowned orca researchers. Baja’s gray whale lagoons are federally protected and Baja’s Loreto Bay in Sea of Cortez is a national marine park and UNESCO World Heritage site. The calving lagoons of the Southern Right whales in Argentina are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Humpback whales are making an amazing comeback from Johnstone Strait to north Alaska.

After a day of wildlife watching, exploring, and nature walks, you will be back at your lodge, hotel, boat or safari-style campsite (depending on location/itinerary) to enjoy tasty hors d’œuvres and a delicious dinner watching sunset fade and stars appear. The meals are outstanding; featuring locally caught seafood and local wines – prepared fresh daily by the company staff.

People of all experience levels will find these tours an excellent introduction to whale watching and even novice sea kayak fully guided by the company’s naturalist and kayak guides.

You can win a FREE space on one of the upcoming adventure tours on the Johnstone Strait in BC Canada. Click the link to learn how. You can enter until May 23rd. Please read all instructions on how to enter. Thanks and good luck!

Bucket List Publications Made A Heli Skiing Dream Come True

Making all her dreams come true, yours too with extreme adventure and travel

Traveling and extreme adventure have been Lesley Carter’s life. Her love of exploring new cultures and countries becomes evident when you hear all of her experiences. She has been an adventure seeker from a very young age. Body-boarding in the ocean is something she started while in elementary school.

When recalling her first extreme adventure, Carter shares,“My first extreme adventure weekend was only about 7 years ago. I went to Interlaken, Switzerland for a weekend of sky-diving in the Swiss Alps, white-water rafting in Class 5 rapids, and bungee jumping over a lake” as she recalls, “It was the most liberating and exhilarating thrill and I’ve been “flying” through adventures since.”

Although her family does travel, extreme sports and adventure are
something she acquired on her own. Her husband, Darren, is an adventure junkie like her so together they are “able to experience all that life has to offer.”

When Lesley and Darren met, adventure and traveling wasn’t a major part of Darren’s life; however, it was something he always desired. Since they met (only two years ago), they’ve been sky-diving, white-water rafting, paragliding, bungee jumping, sky-jumping, helicopter touring/piloting, rock climbing, swimming with beluga whales, surfing and sailing.

In fact, on their wedding day in Jamaica, after the ceremony, they went rock-climbing and did a trapeze act in their full wedding attire. “We made the whole trip about fun and adventure. We wanted our wedding to reflect our personal lifestyle.”

Lesley Carter grew up in Nova Scotia until she was 24 years old. She then lived in Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick. Currently she is living in the U.S. with her husband. It would be their first time to live in the U.S. and after a lot of deliberation Lesley and her husband, Darren chose Southern California. They sold everything they owned, resigned from their positions, and moved across the Continent. Carter states, “Although we miss our family, it was a wonderful decision and we have no intentions of moving back.”

When asked how she keeps in shape for her extreme adventures, Carter says, I keep as active as I possibly can on a regular basis. I ran a marathon a couple of years ago and I exercise daily. After the baby is born, I’d like to start a SUP training program under Pau Hana Surf Supply, I’ll continue kayaking and surfing regularly as well. If you have a busy lifestyle, exercise comes naturally. I love being outdoors and having new experiences; it all relates.”

Since moving to California a little over a year ago, Carter hasn’t been working. When Lesley and Darren moved to Southern California it was with the intent to start a family. She is due in less than two weeks. Prior to their move Lesley had been teaching at various levels for 8 years. She has an Advanced Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History, a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Education, and a Masters degree in Literacy.

With 33 countries under her belt, and 7 of those in the last year, she doesn’t have anything set in stone with the arrival of her daughter to visit any new countries. Lesley does want to keep her daughter as first priority and take things day to day. She does feel 100% certain that a few new countries will be visited within the next year, keeping the options open. Lesley states, Even with a child, we hope to continue our adventurous lifestyle, but maybe at a different level.”

Expecting in less than two weeks, Lesley is still very active in her travel and adventurous lifestyle. She has slowed down with caution for herself and her baby, she says, but that doesn’t mean that life or adventure has stopped.” While being pregnant she has piloted a helicopter and an airplane; visited Canada and Mexico; “and I’ve been to Vegas, the Grand Canyon, San Diego, San Francisco, LA, and Palm Springs.”  She’s also swam with beluga whales and “enjoyed two dolphin and whale safaris.”  Flying in a helicopter over LA and the Grand Canyon are added to the many things she has done all while being an expecting mother. Days ago at 38 weeks pregnant she even went Kayaking. She shares, “I’m about to embark on a paddle boarding journey with Pau Hana Surf Supply

Lesley currently has no plans on writing a book, she says, life has been a continued adventure and you never know what’s around the corner. Carter has published work in travelmag.com and traveldudes.org.

Currently, she publishes her own work and has started Bucket List Publications. Her interest is to start her own travel magazine. Since her baby girl is due pretty soon, she wants to be sure that daily posts remain on her blog. Therefore, she has created an opportunity where she will always have content to publish.

While Bucket List Publications is in full swing, she has given others the opportunity to share their “Bucket List” adventures. To date, she has given away a Skydiving Adventure Package, Free tickets to Sleeping Beauty in Irvine, CA as well as making dreams come true with a heli-skiing adventure package including 4 nights at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, ski lift tickets and equipment at the resort, and heli-skiing with Selkirk Tangiers. She’s also in the process of organizing a NASCAR racing experience and another skydiving adventure package.

In getting to know Lesley, I asked her if she had any inspiring words for someone wanting to experience any single extreme adventure she has experienced. Carter shares, The only thing that gets in the way of conquering an extreme adventure is yourself. Anyone can sky-dive or bungee jump! I try to focus less on the actual process of stepping off the bridge or out of the plane and more on the journey. If I thought too much about it, I would never be able to do it. Extreme sports are totally different experiences from extreme adventures.  They often require skill and physical endurance rather than solely mental courage. If you plan on participating in extreme sports, you need to be sure of your skill and abilities; it’s not something you just walk into.”

Cycling Across Canada: Line dancing and wildlife in Calgary

Travel Destination Bucket List

As the towering mountains gave way to prairie flatlands, the big city congestion greeted me as I cycled into Calgary and struggled to find the Hosteling International hostel on the east side of downtown.

A vibrant city with loads to do, I quickly settled into the hostel life and joined the party and bbq.  Before you knew it, a group of us were off to Cowboys nightclub – touted the best bar in town!  Advertising for Cowboys – “Cowboys has been the biggest and best venue for boot-scooting fun every night in Calgary Proven by those who pack the club each week.  Whether it’s the wannabe cowboys and cowgirls or the horse-riding, hay-pitching variety, they all find what they’re looking for at Cowboys.”  Not wrong – the place was packed.  I didn’t stand a chance in the crowd of partygoers and cowboy hats!

We headed off the next day to…

Cycling Across Canada: Banff and Lake Louise

Travel Destination Bucket List

Cycling across Canada, I had the privilege to see so many stunning places – Banff and Lake Louise, both iconic, were top of my bucketlist of places to spend some quality time!

Lake Louise, also known as the jewel of the Rockies, was my first bucket list stop.  The Hosteling International Lake Louise was like a gift.  The place was packed with a mix of people, including a few other cyclists and tonnes of hikers.  They had live music on the patio when I arrived and the place was full of life.  After living on packaged noodle dishes for the bulk of my adventure, fresh food and drinks with ice cubes (again with the simple pleasures – who knew ice cubes could bring so much joy!!!) was more than I could ask for.  Met a tonne of people, some there to hike and see the Rockies, others just out to…
