The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported this week that average airfares on domestic flights jumped 10 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 from the same period in 2010. That’s the biggest year-over-year jump tracked by the bureau, which has numbers back to 1995.
The bureau said the average fare hit $368, up from $335 in fourth quarter 2010. That’s also an increase of 15 percent from fourth quarter 2009, when fares averaged $320.
Adjusted for inflation, though, the fares in 2011 were less than in 1995, the federal agency said. In 1995 dollars, the fares that year averaged $288, compared with an inflation-adjusted $251 in 2011, the bureau said.
