Earthship Biotecture Green Buildings – Taos, New Mexico

Traveling Vegan

I discovered an intriguing documentary title on Netflix, theGarbage Warrior. After reading about it and watching a trailer I added it to the Netflix queue. It’s about architect Michael Reynolds and his vision of how a structure should be built in consideration of the environment. He’s been involved in green, eco-friendly architecture since 1969 when he began his work after graduating the University of Cincinnati. Reynolds’ Green Earthships are self-sustainable homes made out of recycled materials. Used tires, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and beer cans are the tools that make up the thermal mass of these self-sufficient homes.

Within a month of seeing the Garbage Warrior a road trip to Taos, New Mexico was scheduled with plans to stay at The Phoenix. The Phoenix is an Earthship that is currently for sale, located at the “Greater World” Earthship Community just west of Taos, New Mexico across the Rio…

The Greystone Mansion

It's A Magical World Old Buddy

The Greystone Mansion sits near Sunset Strip in Beverly Hills California. The Mansion was constructed in 1928 by Edward Doheny as a gift to his son. Doheny was an oil entrepreneur infamous for his involvement in the Teapot Dome scandal. The Mansion cost 3 million dollars when it was built, making it the most expensive home in California at the time. The Mansion has now been surpassed in price by a number of more recently constructed homes (and the Teapot Dome scandal has been surpassed by additional scandalous scandals).

The Mansion was purchased by the city in 1965 and became a park half a decade later. Individuals are currently encouraged to stroll the grounds and peer into the windows. You can start your visit by parking at the top of the estate, were you can find nice views of Beverly Hills and surrounding areas. The Mansion is surrounded…

Streets of San Francisco

From Barcelona to Bali

Hands-down, one of my favourite American cities is San Francisco. Although the whole state of California is pretty freakin’ rad, SFO really does stand out. It’s not a beach city, but what it offers in cuisine, attractions, shopping (!), general friendliness and yes, lots of weirdness, more than makes up for boring old sunny shores and sparkling sand.

I’ve been there twice, with both trips revolving around seeing a concert. The first time I went we saw The Tragically Hip, a classic Canuck band, at the Fillmore. Yup, the very same Fillmore where Jimi Hendrix and his entire generation of rock stars played back in the day. Second time was to see City and Colour, also at the Fillmore. Although they were two very different shows, both were amazing and intimate; I even got a few splashes of Hip singer Gordon Downey’s sweat on me. Let’s just say it…

Steel Bridge Songfest 2012 – Four Days of Music and Discovery: June 7-10, 2012

From the Steel Bridge Songfest site:

Steel Bridge Songfest

June 7-10, 2012

We started as a grassroots group called the S.O.B.’s (Save Our Bridge) about 11 years ago, organized to save the historic Michigan Street Bridge from the scheduled wrecking ball. Around 2005, we grew into Citizens for Our Bridge, Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit. To build public appreciation for the historic structure, we hold a week-long celebration every June at The Holiday Music Motel. Hundreds of songwriters from around the world, including Jackson Browne, Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s), James McMurtry, and others have come to this community, written their songs, and dedicated their efforts. A six-disc collection of original songs (Steel Bridge Songs, Vols.1-6) honors the spirit of our bridge and her magnificent presence. Steel Bridge SongsVol.7 will be released during SteelBridge2012.
Since 2007, thanks to assistance from the National Trust For Historic Preservation and funds raised through Steel Bridge Songfest, Sturgeon Bay’s Michigan Street Bridge has been protected as a national treasure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Her 80th birthday was celebrated last summer with completion of the long awaited rehab, including an all-new coat of paint!

Zombie fans come alive at undead events – May is Zombie Awareness Month

When zombie fans want to feel alive, there’s nothing like a date with the undead.

Hungry for realistic encounters, they’re flocking to events where they can be stalked, surrounded and terrified by zombie hordes.

Take the Zombie Survival Horror experience now taking place at an abandoned shopping center in Reading, England, just outside of London.

For about $190 per person, you too can see what it might take to survive a zombie apocalypse and outwit the monsters, that is, the actors who’ve been transformed into gruesome creatures with the help of special-effects makeup.

Hundreds of people have signed up for the four-hour experience since Zed Events began offering it in March, said Lee Fields, company director.

“Everyone loves a good scare,” he noted. “Zombie culture has been steadily growing for years.”

Fans of the rock band Kiss are getting another chance this year to set sail with the group.

Music cruise organizer Sixthman has announced plans for a second all-Kiss-all-the-time extravaganza at sea to take place this fall on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Pearl.

The four-night Kiss Kruise II will kick off on Oct. 31 in Miami and include a call at Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay. It comes just a year after the first Kruise, which took place last October.
